Calories in Theater Popcorn

Don’t turn a blind eye to the theater popcorn machine

Don’t let a lack of nutritional information give you license to eat, especially at the movie theater. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently announced proposed rules regarding nutritional information transparency for restaurants and other businesses, a New York Times article pointed out that movie theaters are exempt. If a food producer or seller isn’t willing to tell you what’s in its product, it could be hiding something.

A cup of the average Pop Weaver microwave popcorn has 40 calories. Add a tablespoon of butter at 100 calories, and your calorie intake adds up pretty quickly. Think about how big those bags at the movie theater are. How many cups of popcorn are you munching and just how much buttery topping are they adding to your kernels?

Enjoy your movie but be wary of the “magic” of the movies. The camera can indeed add pounds if you’re not paying attention.
