The Woman I Love to Hate is a Calorie Counter!

Posted by: Michelle Meyers

She’s the woman I love to hate: Jillian Michael’s. I’ve watched her sneer and scream at The Biggest Loser contestants, sometimes secretly wishing they’d just haul off and smack her. And then when a breakthrough is made, and the tortured soul drops the weight, I see the method to her madness and suddenly see her as the ultimate weight-loss angel, aglow and spreading love and inspiration among us.

After watching her on the well-known reality show, and then seeing her in action on her newest on-air journey, Losing It With Jillian, I can certainly say that no matter what, I respect her knowledge and success when it comes to health and fitness. She shared some of her thoughts recently with the folks at Redbook (July, 2010 issue), and she confirmed the core ideas that I’ve been trying to adopt in my life. According to the article, her four key weight-loss rules are:

  • Count calories (no exceptions)
  • Avoid processed foods
  • Complete 5 intense 30-minute workouts a week
  • Inspire yourself

The counting calories part I’ve gotten under control. With today’s online options, like the food journal in mygraphite.com, it’s easier than ever. I’ve made great strides in the processed food area, and have found that I feel so much better because of it. That part ain’t easy, but once you get into the swing of it and educate yourself on natural food options, it becomes more manageable.

It’s the intense 30-minute workouts a week part that I haven’t mastered. I have the best intentions, but while managing two children, a house and work, well … unless trips to the grocery store count, I’m in trouble. And as for inspiration, I’m working on that too. I guess you could say I have a fifty percent success rate as far as the rules go.

I guess if any wish could come true, it would be that dear Jillian would show up at my doorstep and spread some of her tough love my way. I think I could take it…if I can refrain from smacking her.
